The Vikings have signed former Bengals receiver/return man Glenn Holt. Last year, Holt returned 46 kicks, averaging 24.1 yards. In three years Holt has a 24.3 yards-per-return average with one touchdown. Note that I am focusing on the return aspect of his game…this is because the receiver end of it isn’t worth even mentioning. The guy who really might help the Vikings receiving corps, that other Holt, remains on the market.

Glenn Holt joins Karl Paymah as the only new players signed by the Vikings this off-season. In other news, Jay Cutler wants to be traded by the Broncos! Let’s git ‘im!

Torry Holt asked the Rams last week to be released, and now the team has granted the veteran wide out’s request, sending him packing the same way they just did former Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Pace. Holt immediately becomes the most attractive receiver left on the market, unless you have a huge jones for Bobby Engram. The points against him: Age (32 – still younger than T.O. though); speed (not what it used to be); questions about whether he would make a good over-the-middle complementary-type receiver; bad knee. A number of teams are believed to be interested in Holt, including the Titans, 49ers and Giants. It’s possible one of those teams would be willing to pay him #1 money – and that’s something the Vikings clearly would and should not do.

Could Torry Holt be the guy to make us forget our discontent over the lack of movement by the Vikings in the free agent market this off-season? He’s certainly available. The Rams have been trying to trade him for days, but there’s absolutely no market for him at all. The frustration has only mounted for Holt who has now asked the team to outright cut him so he can make his own deal some place. The Rams have until March 17th, the day he’s due a $1.25 million roster bonus, to figure out what they want to do.

Holt, at one point one of the best 5 receivers in the league without question, saw a precipitous drop-off in his production in 2008: His 64 receptions and 796 yards were his lowest totals since his rookie season of 1999, and his 3 touchdowns were the fewest he has ever scored in a season. Part of the issue was that the Rams simply stunk last year, but there’s also no doubt that Holt’s speed isn’t what it was before the knee injury that hampered him throughout 2007.
