Remember the old days when we had to wait for the media or the team’s PR department to report the signings of newly-drafted players? Well those days are long gone. Now we have Twitter and Instagram, which allows players to announce their own signings, complete with images. That’s exactly what Vikings 7th round pick Trevor Guyton just did. “The pen i used to sign my first contract! Officially a Minnesota Viking!,” the former Cal defensive lineman posted on Instagram Tuesday morning, along with a shot of the pen and the contract.

I guess that’s all the proof we need that Guyton is indeed the first Viking draft pick to sign. The rest should come off the board pretty quickly. Here’s a quick scouting report on the 6-2, 268 pound Guyton via National Football Post:

A strong, physically put together defensive lineman who has experience both at the nose and the five-technique in Cal’s 3-4 front. Possesses an explosive element to his game vs. the run game. When lined-up inside exhibits a plus first step and when he keeps his base down and back straight he not only can anchor inside, but has the lower body strength to overwhelm on contact.

We’ll see where the Vikings decide to play Guyton. He projects as a 3-technique in the 4-3, which means he’d be battling with Christian Ballard for playing time behind Kevin Williams, but maybe if he bulks up he can get some reps at the nose behind Letroy Guion.

Update: It’s a four year deal for Guyton.

The Vikings close out the 2012 draft by taking Trevor Guyton, a defensive lineman from Cal. The report on Guyton is that he’s a run-stopping type with a strong lower body who can be an anchor. He played the nose in Cal’s 3-4 defense so even though he’s listed as a defensive end he can presumably play inside. If he has a role on this team this year it sounds like it will be as a short yardage guy. I don’t see him challenging Letroy Guion and Fred Evans for reps.

And that does it. Three days. 9 picks. Several trades. Lots of controversy. And a whole crapload of stuff to talk about for the next few months. And we haven’t even picked through the undrafted free agents yet! Could be some gems in there too. But for now, I’m gonna make me some buttered noodles and chill out. If I’m this tired imagine how tuckered the folks in the war room must be.
