NFL free agency starts on March 13, only 33 days away. So now is the time to dissect our pending free agents. After the resigning of Pat Brown, the Vikings have 17 free agents to be.

Since we’re all Vikings fans and in need of some good news, I’ll start there. There are only four starters on this list: EJ and Erin Henderson, Husain Abdullah, and Visanthe Shiancoe. So not to worry, the team that went 3-13 and tied for the worst record in Vikings history will almost completely return! Oh, wait. Well, it’s news anyway.

In that list of four starters, the only guy I see as a lock for returning is Erin Henderson. With two-thirds of the Vikings’ linebacking core set to be free agents, at least one will need to be resigned. It could get a little awkward if they split up the brothers, but the NFL is a business and Erin is younger and healthier.

Injuries have hit the Vikings hard in the second half of the season, and today the team was forced to make several moves as a result. No fewer than 4 players were placed on season-ending IR on Tuesday and 4 players were signed to take their places.

Husain Abdullah (concussion), Michael Jenkins (knee), Cullen Loeffler (back) and Tyrell Johnson (hamstring) are the four being sent to IR. Abdullah has missed several weeks after suffering a concussion, while the other three were all injured in Sunday’s game against the Falcons, Loeffler in somewhat controversial fashion. Abdullah and Johnson are both free agents after the year and may have played their last game in purple (Abdullah probably still has a chance to come back, Johnson not so much). (more…)

The first half was a comedy of errors for the Vikings. You want atrocious secondary play? We got Benny Sapp, Tyrell Johnson and Marcus Sherels. You want injuries? We got Tyrell pulling his hammy and long-snapper Cullen Loeffler injuring his tailbone. You want guys playing out of position? We got Jared Allen having to take over long-snapping duties from Loeffler. You want predictable offensive design? We got Bill Musgrave calling the same screen pass to Percy Harvin fifteen times. You want dumb penalties? We got Phil Loadholt with holding and a false start, and Benny Sapp getting called for holding on a punt, and Christian Ponder getting called for illegal motion. Somehow the Vikings were able to make just enough plays on defense to keep the score from getting totally out of hand. Maybe they can rise up defensively in the second half like they did against the Raiders and give their offense a chance. Oh that’s right…the offense can’t do anything anyway. Dang it.
