Antoine Winfield’s second major injury of the season landed the veteran CB on IR, but the roster hole left by Winfield’s departure wasn’t open for long. On Wednesday morning the Vikings hastily worked out former Dolphin Benny Sapp, and by noon the team was ready to announce that Sapp had passed his physical and been signed to a contract.

Of course we all remember Sapp’s first tenure with the Vikings when, filling in for Antoine Winfield during his 2009 absence with a foot injury, Sapp proved himself to be an able coverage guy. Sapp was traded before the 2010 season to the Dolphins in exchange for Greg Camarillo, a move the Vikings probably ended up regretting given their later secondary issues. Benny’s stint in Miami ended abruptly in early 2011 after he got burned by Tom Brady and Wes Welker for a 99-yard touchdown.

It remains to be seen what role Sapp will fill on the team but given his experience and familiarity with the Vikings offense – and given Cedric Griffin’s well-documented struggles the last few weeks – I have to believe he’ll see the field a lot on Sunday and for the rest of the season. (more…)

When last we saw Benny Sapp he was getting stiff-armed into oblivion by Wes Welker during Welker’s 99-yard touchdown catch-and-run on Monday night. After that debacle, it didn’t take the Dolphins long to decide Sapp’s services were no longer required.

It took only five seconds more for Viking fans to call for the team to pick up Sapp who as we remember was traded to Miami last off-season in exchange for Greg Camarillo. Viking fans hold a special place for Sapp in their hearts after the way he hung in as Antoine Winfield‘s replacement when Winfield got hurt late in 2009, and counted Brad Childress‘ decision to trade Sapp high on the list of his crimes against Viking Nation.

At least one Viking player, Winfield, went on record saying he would love to have the scrappy but sometimes not very heady Sapp return to Minnesota. When asked about Sapp himself, Leslie Frazier said he loves Benny but also said the Vikings “have a good situation at cornerback.”

On Thursday morning things developed a little further in the Sapp saga. Jeremy Fowler tweeted that the Vikings have “inquired” about Sapp but cautioned that “nothing is imminent” and suggested if Sapp is brought in it won’t be until after the Tampa Bay game.

The Vikings currently have a solid three-man corner line-up with Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin and the improving (but still penalty-prone) Chris Cook. The fourth spot is held by Asher Allen who was inactive week 1 due to a bad toe. Fifth is Marcus Sherels who is also the punt return man, meaning his job is safe no matter what. Sixth is rookie Brandon Burton who was also inactive against the Chargers.

If the Vikes did sign Sapp he would clearly not be playing in nickel defense, meaning he would not actually see the field much, if ever. At best he would represent an insurance policy in case one of the top three guys got hurt. Or perhaps with Sapp in the fold instead of the utterly worthless Asher Allen the Vikings would elect to go to their dime defense more often, or maybe go with four corners, two linebackers and one safety (since they only have one safety who’s worth a damn anyway).

The point here being, whatever role Sapp filled on the defense would be a limited one at best, unless someone got hurt. Would it be nice to have the entertaining Mr. Sapp back? Sure. Would he make much impact if he did return? Almost certainly not.

Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic was kind enough to trade five questions with The Viking Age as part of this week’s Dolphins coverage. Brian and I discussed former Dolphin Greg Camarillo, the Wildcat, quarterback Chad Henne and the state of Miami’s defense…

Q: Vikings fans are hoping for a lot from former Dolphin Greg Camarillo (mostly because our other receivers are all hurt or just suck). What’s your assessment of him?

A: Greg Camarillo is the Brett Favre savior that he doesn’t know he has. A Wes Welker clone with better hands but a slower speed, Camarillo is every QB’s favorite target because frankly, he doesn’t drop that many balls. In fact, I can’t remember the last time he did. Brett Favre needs to use him and get out of the mindset that throwing deep is always the answer, Cams is a superb route runner and knows how to create space. When Brett Favre figures this out, the Vikings’ passing game is going to be stellar. Hopefully, he doesn’t find that out until next week.

Q: Tony Sparano said this week of the Wildcat, “I don’t think there is any surprise anymore but it is part of what we do. … I think it’s part of our identity.” Do you think it’s really a viable offense at this point?

A: Absolutely not. It is an ongoing joke among most Phin fans. The Wild Cat is a fad and that fad is over. It may be a part of their identity but that doesn’t mean it works. Oh, and it doesn’t work anymore. So if Sparano says it doesn’t surprise anyone anymore, than why run it at all?

Q: The Dolphins’ pass defense looked dominating in game 1, but that was against the Bills. How good is the pass defense really?

A: Honestly, fans are asking the same thing. Was it Buffalo or was it Mike Nolan’s schemes? The team surprised a lot of us with the play of Koa Misi at OLB and Chris Clemons at safety but we are still wondering if it’s all for real. We will get a better idea after Sunday.

Q: Is Chad Henne a quarterback who can lead the Dolphins to a Super Bowl?

A: I can stand here today and say yes. However, I don’t know if I can say that a year from now. Chad Henne is a good QB but he has a long way to go. While this is his 3rd NFL season, he only started last year after Chad Pennington got hurt. In reality, Mark Sanchez in NY has more starting experience at this level than Henne does. Henne, to me, needs to stop second guessing himself. He tends to play faster than the game and he needs to slow down and play at the same speed. He often checks down far too quickly and makes his reads on a simple 6 second countdown and that won’t work in real games.

Q: Miami’s defense is a bit banged up. How do you see them doing against Adrian Peterson who seems extra-motivated this year?

A: Miami will approach AP the same way the approach everyone. They will try and contain the outside and move him back inside where the linebackers can make plays. How well this succeeds will depend on what defense Miami really has. They are good at stopping the run, but if they fall too far behind they will start to take unnecessary risks and then AP will explode on them.
