Heading into the 2021 offseason, the Vikings were hoping to figure out a way to get safety Anthony Harris to re-sign with the team. But Minnesota and Harris could not agree to any sort of deal, and he ended up signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Harris’ departure left an opening at the top of the Vikings’ safety depth chart next to Harrison Smith. Filling this hole on the roster is something many Minnesota fans were curious about during the last few months.

To help make the absence of Harris a little easier to deal with, the Vikings did go out and sign free-agent safety Xavier Woods. But with a bunch of inexperience behind Woods and Smith on the depth chart, some wondered if Minnesota would look to bring back a veteran safety who is familiar with their defensive scheme like Andrew Sendejo or Goerge Iloka.

The Vikings didn’t add any more veteran safeties after signing Woods, but they did end up using one of their 2021 draft picks on a safety. With their second selection in the fourth round this year, Minnesota decided to draft former California defensive back, Camryn Bynum.

Bynum lined up as a corner in college, but the Vikings are planning to use him at safety. Even though Minnesota is still lacking some veteran experience behind their two starting safeties, any chance of the team bringing back a familiar face like Sendejo is likely gone after the selection of Bynum.
