Quarterback

Kirk Cousins

As is tradition with the Vikings, the quarterback position was a complete mess in the 2010s. What started with Brett Favre‘s final season led the way to the Christian Ponder era before switching over to Teddy Bridgewater, who physically saw his knee explode in a practice. Sam Bradford, Matt Cassell, and Donovan McNabb also made cameos, but the debate for this spot is a familiar one between Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins.

Although Keenum wins the sentimental vote for the Minneapolis Miracle, it has been Cousins that has provided some stability to the position. In fact, if it weren’t for Cousins being rested on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago Bears, he would have been the first quarterback to start 16 games in back-to-back seasons for the Vikings since Fran Tarkenton did it in 1975 and 1976.

Of course, Cousins has been known for his stats and whether you consider them to be empty or not, they look pretty good when filling this team out. In 31 starts for the Vikings, Cousins has thrown for 7,901 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, but still hasn’t been able to win the big game.

If Cousins can break through for a playoff win in the next decade, it might sway the court of public opinion on the $84 million quarterback. Until then, the stats are going to be what defines Cousins’ stay with the Vikings.
