6 free-agent wide receivers the Vikings could sign in 2020
By Zack Patraw
Jordan Matthews
The last signing to discuss is Jordan Matthews, who has bounced around from a few different teams since having early success with the Philadelphia Eagles. He entered the league in 2014 and produced well until after his 2016 season when he suffered an injury. He has been dealing with injuries every year since then.
Injury history isn’t something Vikings fans want to hear about. But again, with the terrible cap situation Minnesota is expected to in this offseason, the injury concerns could help them land a quality player at a premium discount.
Matthews had a minimal cap hit last year and his next deal will likely result in a minimal cap hit again. The fact is, the Vikings need to find receivers that they can afford and ones that are going to provide quality depth to their receiver room.
Through Matthews’ first three years he put up 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns on 225 catches during his 46 games. The hope is that he can get back to that level of production or at least close. He’s someone who gives a team a solid presence in the slot and he causes mismatches for opposing nickel corners.
Matthews is a receiver Minnesota fans should be looking forward to going after this offseason. While the injury history is something to be concerned with, he has the potential to be the third receiver on the Vikings’ depth chart and put up good numbers at a discounted price. The kicker is going to be whether he can do it without missing too many games.
