Greg Zuerlein

There was one time when Greg Zuerlein looked like he could be the future of NFL kickers. The big-legged kicker nicknamed “Greg the Leg” was known for being able to kick some very long field goals and did so very accurately early in his career.

Much like Folk, consistency has been the downfall for Zuerlein. He has played some amazing seasons where he connected on well over 90 percent of his field-goal attempts and others where he made as few as two-thirds of his tries.

Of course, a kicker will miss more when trying a larger number of long kicks, but gambling like that with field position isn’t a big part of Mike Zimmer’s strategy. Because of his skill set, he may not be the best fit for the Vikings.

To add to the problems, Zuerlein is coming off a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams which cost them an average of around $2.5 million per season. If he’s hoping to get anywhere near that in the free-agent market, Minnesota would be smart to invest in one of the other available kickers instead.
