The new defensive coordinators
Having fresh ideas mixed with plenty of experience could be just what the Vikings need to reinvigorate their defense.
They had a good season in 2019, overall, but this is a group that has been together for some time. That will likely change this year as a host of high-earners and free agents look set to move onto new pastures.
The likes of Xavier Rhodes and Linval Joseph are prime candidates for release due to their big salaries, while Everson Griffen’s long tenure with Minnesota is also up in the air given his recent decision to opt out of his current deal.
Add to that the impending departures of free-agent duo Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander and the need to extend standout safety Anthony Harris and the Vikings defense could have a completely different look in 2020.
New defensive coordinators Andre Patterson and Adam Zimmer will know full well the tools they have at their disposal. Both received a huge amount of credit for the way they have worked behind the scenes in assistant positions in recent years and each is deserving of their chance to step up.
Patterson, in particular, has revitalized Minnesota’s defensive line into one of the most formidable groups in the NFL. His exceptional coaching has propelled Griffen, Danielle Hunter, and countless others to new heights over the years.
Zimmer appears to be a chip off the old block and is following in his father’s footsteps seamlessly so far. Both of the Vikings’ new co-defensive coordinators have paid their dues and they should feel confident in making a successful transition to a more prominent leadership position this year.
