Jake Luton – QB (Oregon State)

Quarterback? Really? Yes. Oregon State’s Jake Luton was a pleasant surprise as far as prospects go. The weigh-ins will give us a better idea, but Luton is currently listed at 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds. Better yet, he can move with this size and extend plays out of the pocket.

While I like his size, there is more to Luton’s game that is to love. He has superb arm talent that will be on full display during the on-field drills this week. He flashed incredible placement on his throws at Oregon State as well.

A big reason for Luton’s success was his anticipation. He did a great job of throwing guys open and he also managed to hit his receivers in stride. But not everything is perfect.

Luton struggled quite a bit with staring down his receivers. He is also a bit impatient in the pocket and he looks to escape too often.

One strange thing from his film was the number of passes he had batted down at the line. His size should eliminate that, but he tends to drive the ball low. Cleaning up his pocket awareness and his ability to go through his reads will go a long way.

With the size and arm talent to adore, Luton will probably be buzzing as he departs from Indianapolis. If the Vikings want a developmental backup quarterback, Luton is a name to consider
