New England Patriots

The Patriots have a big need at the safety position this year as Devin McCourty is a free agent and Patrick Chung is 32-years-old. The talent behind them on New England’s depth chart leaves a lot to be desired, so upgrades are needed.

The Patriots are a team that has been linked to a safety in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft and it is common to see Xavier McKinney or Grant Delpit mocked to them. Instead of going the rookie route, New England could bring in an established talent like Anthony Harris.

Playing for the Patriots still has plenty of allure for free agents, even if Tom Brady bolts for another team this offseason. They’ve built a culture of winning with arguably the greatest head coach of all-time, Bill Belichick, in charge.

New England almost always wins their division and a spot in the playoffs is all but a guarantee. Harris would know he’d be going to a contender and that would be very tempting.

Adding Harris to the Patriots secondary would improve an already dominating unit. New England has the best cover corner in the league in Stephon Gilmore. Next to him is Jason McCourty who is no slouch. If they add Harris to that group, whose coverage is his strong suit, this group suddenly becomes impossible to throw against.

It would be a mutually beneficial pairing that just makes too much sense, given the need, fit, and the Patriots’ cap room.
