3 worst Minnesota Vikings second-round picks of the last decade
By Nik Edlund
Mackensie Alexander – CB (2016)
I hate putting Mackensie Alexander on this list, as he has played well in recent years, and it feels like his best football is yet to come. Though, looking at his stats, one would be quite shocked to see he was taken with a second-round draft choice.
Alexander had a very tough start to his NFL career. When he finally got reps in live-action he was extremely grabby and was often flagged for pass interference. He was routinely out of position and genuinely looked lost on the field. After his first two seasons, he looked to be a bust. Then the light came on. Alexander found his niche playing nickel corner and turned out to be an excellent blitzer. In 2018, he had 4.0 sacks and 43 tackles. He took a bit of a step back in 2019, as he missed time with injuries, and had just half a sack to go with his 38 tackles.
Alexander recently signed with the Cincinnati Bengals ending his tenure with the Vikings. His career numbers in purple are not overly impressive. He finished with 103 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 21 pass breakups, and two interceptions. He’s not a bust, and again he seems like a guy who is just starting to figure things out.
Though many Minnesota Vikings fans are sad to see him go, it can’t be argued that the numbers he produced over four years with the team are a disappointing return on a second-round investment.
