Nwangwu will be this year’s “Mr. Mankato”

Each year an unknown player will break out during training camp, earning the moniker of Mr. Mankato. The SKOR North creation has taken a life of its own and as the Vikings converge upon Eagan, the legend of Mr. Mankato lives on.

That being said, the top candidate for this year’s winner is Kene Nwangwu.

Vikings fans let out a collective “What?” when Nwangwu was selected in the fourth round out of Iowa State. The former Cyclone played behind David Montgomery and Breece Hall during his time in Ames, leading to just 744 career rushing yards.

But it’s the physical attributes that set Nwangwu apart. Nwangwu ripped a 40-yard dash of 4.32 seconds last spring and has the size to develop into a capable backup. With that speed, it’s conceivable that Nwangwu could break off a big run in a preseason game that will have Vikings fans lighting up their social media feeds.

Although Alexander Mattison is still second on the depth chart, the Vikings played him for an average of eight snaps between Weeks 8-13 last season. If the Vikings have lost faith, Nwangwu could make a surge up the depth chart with a strong performance and take home the coveted award.
