Joseph will keep his job for the whole season

After a hot start, things have been a little rocky for Vikings kicker Greg Joseph during the last few weeks. Joseph has missed at least one kick, whether it be a field-goal attempt or an extra-point try, in each of Minnesota’s last four games.

Despite Vikings special teams coordinator Matt Daniels raving about Joseph all summer long, the Minnesota kicker has been a bit underwhelming so far this season. However, there are still some reasons to remain optimistic about Joseph for the rest of the year.

First, all of his missed field-goal attempts this season have come from at least 50 yards away. On attempts from 49 yards out or closer, Joseph is 8-for-8 this year. So it’s not like he’s missing from everywhere, the longer kicks are the ones that appear to be giving him the most trouble, as they do for the majority of the kickers around the NFL.

Second, Joseph’s chances of getting back on track are much higher this season than they were just a year ago. The positive approach to just about everything from the Vikings’ new coaching staff should make it harder for the veteran kicker to get rattled and fall into a slump.

Joseph is likely going to miss some more kicks this year, but he won’t make enough mistakes for Minnesota to show him the door before the end of the season.
