Bold Prediction No. 2

Nick Mullens will beat out Jaren Hall as the second quarterback

A lot of people raised their eyebrows when the Vikings selected Hall in the fifth round of this year’s draft. Hall had a lot of success at BYU and threw for 3,171 yards, 31 touchdowns, and just six interceptions with the Cougars during his senior season, but he remains a project thanks to his small stature and advanced age (25 years old).

This has made Hall more of a project than “quarterback of the future.” Hall received limited reps with the second team during minicamp and worked behind Mullens in most of the drills. If that’s any indication, Mullens should have the inside track to back up Kirk Cousins – especially considering offensive coordinator Wes Phillips’s assessment of Hall’s development during minicamp.

“I think for a quarterback to come in and, especially if you’re not thrust into the role, and you’re getting limited reps, just to see him out here kind of following Nick Mullens’ lead,” Phillips said. “Right now, they’re out on the field going through the script, the plays that he did not get, walking through it, even if it’s just visualization or mental. He’s got young receivers out there right now, and they’re going through the plays.”

With the NFL allowing teams to carry a third emergency quarterback, Hall’s roster spot shouldn’t be in danger. But unless he erupts during training camp, he’ll spend 2023 learning behind Mullens.
