Reason No. 1
Other players were in more pressing situations
Yes, Justin Jefferson is a superstar and the face of the Minnesota Vikings organization but it takes more than one person to get on the field and win football games. For that reason, some players around him needed extensions since their contracts were set to expire after this season.
T.J. Hockenson was a great addition to the team when he arrived in a trade from the Detroit Lions and should continue to be a great asset. Minnesota paid him like a top tight end in the league and looks to be a good investment as part of the Vikings offense.
The extension that surprised some people was Josh Metellus. The safety had been seen working nickel duties in training camp and made the most of his opportunities on defense after primarily being a special teams player.
Minnesota still needs to figure out what to do with guys like Danielle Hunter, Kirk Cousins, Marcus Davenport, K.J. Osborn, Ezra Cleveland, and others who are set to become free agents when the season concludes.
