Flynn or Brohm – Either Way the Packers Lose

The Green Bay Packers list 7th Round draft pick QB Matt Flynn ahead of 2nd rounder Brian Brohm on their depth chart.  This would not be a big deal if the competition between them were for the #3 slot behind Aaron Rodgers and some veteran backup – but the Packers don’t have the veteran backup, and therefore have a rookie 7th round pick as the guy to step in should some misfortune befall Rodgers.  I am honestly stupefied that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have allowed this situation to come about.  Even last year when everyone was crying about the Vikings giving the #1 job to someone as green as Tarvaris Jackson, at least an effort was made to get a decent veteran #2 – the Packers seemingly haven’t even tried to find someone they could count on in a pinch.  Chris Simms and Joey Harrington are floating out there right now, and are the Packers even bringing them in to visit?  What are they waiting for?  Don Majkowski to descend from heaven and rescue them?

And of course you know what will happen if Rodgers does get hurt and Flynn or Brohm go out there and stink the joint up – they’ll say it was all Brett Favre‘s fault for taking up so much of their time in the offseason, time they could’ve spent finding a backup.  And the lies won’t stop there.  They’ll say they would’ve welcomed Favre himself back if only he hadn’t jerked them around so much with the retiring and unretiring.  They’ll pretend they didn’t want Favre out of town for completely personal and jealous reasons.  They’ll act like Rodgers wasn’t really their guy all along but they were stuck with him after Favre stabbed them in the back.  And, sadly, a lot of Packer fans will go along with that.  A disastrous season seems almost inevitable for the Pack at this point, and when it happens, Favre will be the scapegoat.  Convenient.
