Not to Wear You Out With the Brett Favre Stuff, But…

Is the Brett Favre stuff getting to be too much?  Gosh, I’m sorry, but…well, you should see my traffic numbers ever since he got released from the Jets.  This makes the Jay Cutler bonanza look like nothing by comparison.  So, I guess it’s all Favre all the time, at least until there’s something else worth blogging about.  Thankfully, there’s always something new to add to the ever-mounting body of evidence that suggests Favre is indeed planning to make a return to football.  The latest is something that’s actually a couple months old, but has sudden relevance given recent events:  a bit from an Orlando Sentinel interview with Favre, conducted in February, in which the quarterback already seems to be waffling about his retirement decision.  When asked if he was indeed through, Favre said:

"I’m coming off a torn bicep tendon, but I still think I can throw. It hurt toward the end of the year, but I still think in my mind I can play. It’s there. … But soon to be 40? I just don’t know if it’s worth a try. But there will be a day, I’m sure, when I feel like I could play 291 more."

This, I think, reinforces what I already believed:  that whatever decision Favre does make will be long in coming, because it all depends on the health of his arm, which was said to need surgery, but going by the above remark, may actually not.  If it’s a matter of resting the arm and getting it well, then Favre should absolutely wait until the last possible second to commit to playing.  Of course, that doesn’t mean the Vikings can’t have informal talks with him in the meantime, and strike some kind of verbal agreement.  And the great thing about it is, if Favre decides not to return, the Vikes have already covered themselves in the quarterback department.

It all fits together so perfectly, one is almost tempted to believe it was planned out this way from the start.
