GM Spielman: Vikings Will Do “Full Monty” On Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III

Multiple talkers have arisen from Rick Spielman’s media sit-down on Thursday. Earlier I blogged about his dismissal of the Randy Moss rumors. If that wasn’t enough for you, check out what Spielman said about the quarterback situation and specifically how the Vikings feel about the two QBs projected to go at the very top of the draft, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

“I know we’re very confident in Christian, but if one of those quarterbacks is too good to pass up, you also have to weigh that in too,” Spielman told the media. “But we’re very, very confident in what Christian Ponder brings. As we go through this process and our coaches come into this process and we put this thing together in April, I don’t know where we’ll be.”

Spielman then said the Vikings will indeed be present at the workouts for Luck and Griffin. “We’ll be doing full monty on [Luck] and RG3,” Spielman said.

That sounds dirty. But what Spielman really means is, the Vikings will do their due diligence on Griffin and Luck. And that’s what you would expect them to do. Anything less would be gross negligence.

That said, I would be very, very surprised if the Vikings take Luck or Griffin. I believe they’re committed to Christian Ponder as their QB of the future. Spielman’s words could be taken as a sign of wavering confidence in Ponder, or as an attempt at motivation. Or, maybe Spielman is just playing the draft game. The Cleveland Browns sit right behind the Vikes in the draft order, and Spielman would like nothing more than to swing a trade with them, swapping the 3rd and 4th picks and grabbing Cleveland’s 22nd overall pick in the bargain. To make that happen, Spielman has to either convince the Browns that some team is looking to trade ahead of them and take Griffin (the man expected to be there at 3 unless the Rams make a trade, rendering everything I’m saying right now moot), or that the Vikings themselves might take Griffin, thereby stealing him away from Brad Childress (nah nah Chilly).

Long story short, it’s in the Vikings’ interest to make everyone else in the draft think they could go against conventional wisdom and take a quarterback. Hence their chin-stroking over Griffin and Luck. I think it’s a ruse. I have been known to be wrong though. Like, a lot.
