Draft 2012: Vikings Have a “High Level” Of Interest in Alshon Jeffery

Alshon Jeffery is a favorite of many Viking fans and it looks like he could be a favorite of Rick Spielman too. In an ESPN Chicago piece, Jeff Dickerson quotes a league source as saying the Vikings have a “high level of interest” in the former South Carolina receiver. Dickerson says the Bears and Jaguars are also interested in Jeffery, but neither of those teams is likely to use a first round pick on the receiver, meaning he would still be there for the Vikings at 35th overall.

Jeffery is certainly fast and he was productive in college. The question marks on him are all on the character and mental side. Some worry about his conditioning and others are concerned he’s not a guy who will bust it in practice. I’ve seen several scouting reports that cast doubt on his ability to become a legit deep threat in the pros. The other day I put forth Rueben Randle as the Vikings’ best option at receiver and dismissed the notion of drafting Jeffery who seems like a bit of a risky proposition on a number of fronts. If reports of the Vikings’ interest in Jeffery are true, that obviously means they don’t share my concerns. We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one. The terms “#3 receiver” and “head-case” keep popping into my mind when I think about this guy.
