TVA Fantasy Football: Hennepin Ave Week 2

facebooktwitterreddit

Ah, the first Thursday Night Football game of the season. A magical time when millions of fans are annoyed that one NFL game per week is broadcast on NFL Network, a channel not available under basic cable packages.

I’m convinced Buffalo Wild Wings paid the NFL hundreds of millions of dollars to make this happen to bring customers in on Thursdays.

“Hey everyone, don’t you hate the NFL? Well so do we! But we will still show their Thursday games on our TVs so you don’t have to buy the extra channels! Plus we have wings and beer!”

Money.

Their slogan should be: Wings, Beer, Thursday Night Football. Or at least Wings, Beer, NFL. Come on, no way any significant amount of people actually go to BWW to watch any other sport. I mean, when I fall asleep watching baseball, I want to snooze on the comfort of my couch, not some solid wood, no padding chair/table.

Speaking of falling asleep, let’s get to the Week 1 scores and Week 2 matchups!

Maybe I should start serving wings and beer to hold your attention…Okay, but that’s where I draw the line, I’m not desperate enough to wear the shorts…yet.

I’m seeing the flaw in my team already. I have too many players from a team I hate, three regular starters, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall and Bears defense, and one bench player, Jay Cutler all playing for Chicago. Now I don’t mind having them around, but I end up getting too close to being a Bears fan each week, especially when the Bears’ lose and my team suffers…like this week. Now I’m sad because the Bears sucked. That’s just not right.

Speaking of not right, Matt Forte, my second-round pick, might have a high ankle sprain. Which is unfortunate because running back is one of my worst positions in terms of depth (Jay “4 picks, 2 fantasy points” Cutler is my backup QB…if it’s still okay to call him a QB). And of course, Paul Howell, Mr. Fantasy Football, already drafted Michael Bush. How did he know Matt Forte would get injured? His wizardry knows no bounds.

On the flip side, CJ Spiller exploded last week for the Bills, and with Fred Jackson getting hurt, Spiller is in line for some great numbers. I’d like to say I saw that coming, but come on, there’s only one Paul Howell.

Overall, not much change to my lineup this week. I’m a little concerned about the Patriots/Cardinals matchup. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not concerned the Pats will struggle or anything. I’m concerned they’ll be able to let off the gas after about 3 minutes into the game when they are up 28-0. Here’s hoping all four of those TDs are From Tom Brady to either Brandon Lloyd or Rob Gronkowski. Then coast all you want boys.

I claimed Jonathan Dwyer of the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. The Pittsburgh running back situation is a mess. Mendenhall was supposed to be out for a long time because he tore his ACL in Week 17 last year. Then, in true Adrian-Peterson-like fashion, Mendenhall was suddenly available and healthy. Then Week 1 comes and Mendenhall was inactive. When did Mike Shanahan leave the Redskins to coach the Steelers? And does that mean that Mike Tomlin is available!?!?

All the guys in the know said Isaac Redman was the way to go, but he was nonexistent in Week 1. Jonathan Dwyer only had 9 carries for 43 yards, but at least he put up a decent average (4.8 YPC). Mendenhall could be back soon to create a fantasy owner’s worst nightmare – the dreaded running back by committee – but I’m willing to take that risk. Through the first week, I’ve already seen enough of Felix Jones to know that even if DeMarco Murray gets injured, I wouldn’t want Felix on my fantasy team.

August 30, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (28) warms up before a preseason game against the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-US PRESSWIRE

Adrian Peterson reclaims a starting spot on my roster after a great performance last week (that I completely missed out on by benching him), and I have high hopes for him against the Colts. The other RB spot came down to Doug Martin or Michael Turner, and I like Martin’s upside despite facing the Giants’ defense. I claimed TE Jacob Tamme off waivers this week because he seems to be Peyton Manning’s favorite TE target, not to mention Manning looks to be fully healed. Pierre Garcon gets my Flex spot, and I’m not worried about his foot injury and Questionable status. Garcon had a monster 1st quarter in Week 1 and has a nice matchup against the Rams in Week 2. If something does change by Sunday, WR Antonio Brown from the Steelers will get the start.

September 9 2012; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (18) warms up before the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Sports Authority Field. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE

Got clever and picked up Randall Cobb just before the Packer game. Got me a whole 4 points. Probably doesn’t matter who I start this weekend since my team is dogcrap. I do have Peyton Manning on my bench. So there’s that.

Stay tuned for updates every Friday on the happenings of Hennepin Ave and possibly wings and beer! Now I just need Bill Gates and/or Mark Zuckerberg to invent food transportation over the internet…And if that doesn’t work, maybe I’ll look into those shorts!
