Leslie Frazier: Vikings Will Have Competition For Back-Up QB Spot

Confirmation that the Vikings will at least give themselves another option alongside back-up QB Joe Webb. Leslie Frazier told KFAN’s Paul Allen that the Vikings will have an “open competition” for the #2 job this year. Does this mean Joe Webb vs. McLeod Bethel-Thompson or does it mean Joe Webb vs. Someone New? No idea yet. I will however refer you to Tony Pauline’s report that Drew Stanton may be on the Vikings’ radar screens as a free agent target.

Stanton sounds like exactly the sort of QB the Vikings would bring in and pit against Webb in training camp. Maybe MBT fits into that picture or maybe not. I would think he has to fit somewhere given how optimistic they were about his skills last year.

I personally think that Joe Webb would be toast in any open competition against any reasonably competent quarterback. Drew Stanton is no great shakes but he should have no problem defeating Webb. As we saw in the playoff debacle, Webb can’t throw. At all.

And for those of you who still wish to keep Webb around as a gimmick QB/Wildcat specialist/possible wide receiver? Time to get over it. That take is so 2011.

It’s about time that Joe Webb permanently changes posistions. He’s is crazy athletic and he could be valuable as a receiver (if he can catch that is). We arleady know he can run, as well as we already know he can throw the ball pretty far. Unfortunatly when he throws the ball far, it’s awfully similar to my drives on a par 5. They go really far, but it’s anyone’s guess as to where they’re going to go. Give him a chance to contribute as a receiver, and if he can’t, we need to stop wasting a roster spot on him.

Joe Webb better start learning how to run routes cuz he sure ain’t no qb vikes need a back up who can come in and win games ifponder fails or gets hurt

I’m just glad to finally see Vikes fans getting away from the “Joe Webb is a better QB than Ponder” nonsense. Give him a shot as kick return specialist, or possibly a WR but otherwise why bother taking him to camp as a QB? He’s already proven he can’t play the position. Bring in two or three actual QB’s to compete with MBT for the #2 gig and move away from Webb. We clung to T-Jack for years, we seem to be doing the same with Webb.

  • John

They need a competition for the starting QB.

Can Webb catch? Is it too late to convert him to a WR, as was the original idea when he was drafted?

  • Andrew

Joe has a bad game at Green Bay and everybody wants him off the team altogether. Ponder throws for 120 yards and 2 drive killing interceptions at Green Bay and we won’t even bring in competition for him as the starter. Seems about right.

  • Mando

Jesus christ. Joe Webb cannot catch. They tried it in college, he sucked and then moved him back to QB and then the Vikes tired it and he still sucked. Get over it people. And yes, webb has one bad game and he’s done, why? Because after Ponder pulled it together after his string of bad games, and led us to the playoffs, Webb SUCKED. His one job was to be ready to take over and guess what he wasn’t. Could throw, couldn’t run, couldn’t read the defense. He couldn’t do a damn thing he needed to do and cost us the playoffs. Joe Webb is athletic but not football smart. His only good plays are lucky ones and his luck ran out.

    • Andrew

He was ready in Detroit, Philly, and Washington. Not many backup QB’s could do what he did in those three games

      • Mando

Whoopee. We need a backup ready for the playoffs. He isn’t. He won’t be. He’s a veteran now and is no better now than he was as a rookie. Did you not see him in the preseason? He couldn’t even read the vanilla defenses! Would it have been great if Webb and his athleticism could contribute to our team, but he can’t. Heck I’m sure the only team who would want Webb are the eagles or the jets, and you see what a laughing stock they are right now. This was Ponder’s first official season and sure while it wasn’t as awesome as RG3, Luck and Wilson, he did lead us to the playoffs. Our WR wouldn’t even make the practice squad on most teams, and Vikings “fans” want to focus on getting a new QB or thinking Webb will magically get better? Why because he has better arm strength? A lot of good his arm strength does when he can’t hit the board side of a barn, or read a defense. And if “fans” think a crappy backup can magically improve, why not Ponder? Ugh. Webb needs to go. This is getting ridiculous.

  • Mando

The ONLY thing Webb would have been useful for was a 6th or 7th round pick… that is UNTIL his sucky game and now we’d probably have to give a team a pick just to take him off our hands.
