New FanSided.com Mock Draft Has Vikings Taking Matt Barkley

We’re in that part of the draft speculation season where things start getting a little silly. The mock drafters are tired of writing the same names over and over so they start shaking things up. They start going off on wild flights of fancy. Case in point: The new mock over at FanSided.com. This week Josh Sanchez has the Vikings taking USC quarterback Matt Barkley. Oh really? Here’s the argument:

Linebacker could be an interesting way to go for the Vikings with this pick, but they have to strongly consider Matt Barkley in this scenario. Ponder hasn’t shown any reason to believe he is a long-term answer for the team and they can afford to look at other options and think outside the box with their second of two first-round picks. Barkley is the No. 2 rated signal-caller in this year’s draft and has shown more potential throughout his career than Ponder.

Like I said, wild flight of fancy. We all know the Vikings will not be taking a quarterback. You can argue they probably should take a quarterback but that’s a separate thing. They’re not going to take one. They’ve got their starter in Christian Ponder. Their #2 in Matt Cassel. Their developmental guy in McLeod Bethel-Thompson. And they still have Joe Webb at least for now. Their QB cupboard is full. If they do take a QB it would only be a late round shot-in-the-dark thing.

So all you Christian Ponder fans can just relax. We know the Vikings aren’t drafting a QB. Guys like Paul Charchian who keep talking about that, they’re just trying to get you riled. You should really lighten up about your guy. You seem kind of insecure about the whole issue frankly. It’s almost like, deep down, you know he sucks but you don’t want to admit it.

Kidding. Relax.

You’re kidding me right? A QB from USC?…The place that has brought to us recently Matt Leinert and Mark Sanchez? Although the Vikings did take USC QB John David Booty in the 5th round back in 2008, we all know how that turned out in the end. NO QB’s FROM USC PLEASE!

And you call yourself ‘draftnik’? There is absolutely no logical reason for one QB to do poorly in the NFL just because other QB’s who attended the same school have floundered. That’s like saying you’re a dumbass because you drive the same model car as some other dumbass. Maybe you’re on to something…

Please. I know the Vikes aren’t taking a QB in the first, but knocking the guy, simply because of the school he went to is absurd. Barkley actually DOES grade out better than Ponder, coming out of college, and if they were both on the board at the same time, the Vikes would take Barkley every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Although I do agree about ponder is a reach and probably reached his peak.

I have been one of Christian Ponder’s biggest detractors…To not acknowlege the improvement from year 1 to year 2 is irresponsible…He simply did what he was asked to do…When it was apparent that AP was almost unstoppable he just handed him the ball and when he threw it, just don’t throw it to the other team…His INT % dropped over a half point from 1.8 to 1.25, completeing 62% and QB rating of 82 up from 71 the year prior. Yes he had bad games, but was 4-2 in those games.(they won or were even in the TO battle) More improvement is expected and a solid #1 WR can only help…My point on this article is this. Why even bring it up then? To go further. Why would the Vikings in effect take the same QB they already have in Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel? The same comments come along with Barkley…He can make all the throws, but can he make them with velocity?…The offense the Vikings employ this season will have better route running and hopefully a healthy squad of receivers. Last year we had neither…
