Who Should Be On Vikings Mt. Suckmost?

You’ve all seen the Mount Rushmore posts over at Pro Football Talk? It’s a pretty basic premise in sports talk and sports blogging. Pick a franchise. Then pick the four people who are the most significant and great in the history of that franchise. For example, according to PFT, Vikings Mount Rushmore should include Alan Page, Adrian Peterson, Fran Tarkenton and Cris Carter. The fans who voted over there said Bud Grant should be up there instead of Page. I’d bump Carter in favor of Bud but that’s just me.

Well that’s all great but what about the flip side? We have celebrated the heroes but what about the goats? The men who epitomize the other side of the coin? The moments of ineptitude? The failures? The outright embarrassments?

Some of you may be asking why we should even go there. I guess I am just Mr. Negativity. But I also believe there is a certain value in remembering the low points of the past. It makes us appreciate the triumphs all the more. Eventually there will be some triumphs to appreciate. Just hang in there Viking fans!

So let’s forget about Vikings greatness for a little while and celebrate Vikings suckiness. Who are your choices not for Vikings Mount Rushmore but Vikings Mount Suckmost?

There are plenty of worthy candidates. Just off the top of my head I can name several guys deserving of this distinction. Of course there may be a few guys I’m forgetting. In the interest of thoroughness, I’m going to open things up to the readers for nominees. If you have someone you think is deserving of inclusion on Mt. Suckmost, mention them in the comments. Or tweet the names to @thevikingage. Remember this can include players, coaches, GMs, owners – anyone who contributed to Vikings failure over the years. After a few days I will round up the worthiest nominees plus the people I want to nominate and whittle the list down to 12. Then we’ll have a vote and the top four vote-getters will be placed on Mt. Suckmost. Sound like fun? Let’s get nominating.

    Lesticle…without question!

  • Kevin

Erasmus James, Troy Williamson, John David Booty, Dimitrius Underwood, and Brooks Bollinger.

    • Rob

Booty and Bollinger weren’t high draft choices or expensive free agents. The other ones I’d go with. Busts. I’d consider adding Bernard Berrian as much for his attitude on the way out the door as for his lackluster play.

      • Kevin

Good call on Bernard I forgot his suckiness.

brad childress because of the talent we had and being a main reason why we failed to go to super bowl in 2008. i also believe fred smoot considered what we spent and what he ended up. les steckel is an easy one. hershal walker, maybe unfair but he was the missing piece that never was, and set us back for years due to that terrible trade. maybe not his fault, but he didn’t live up the billnig.

QB Christian Ponder, MLB Erin Henderson, Brad Childress, WR Sydney Rice, WR Bernard Berrian, QB Tarvaris Jackson, WR Troy Williamson, QB Jeff George, S Medea Williams, S Tyrell Johnson, K Gary Anderson, RB Darren Nelson, CB Dewayne Washington, RB DJ Dozier, RB Hershell Walker, Mike Lynn, RB Leo Hayden, DE Gerald Robinson, CB Kenny Wright, CB Marcus McCaulley

  • Christopher Tucker

Dimitrius Underwood, Erasmus James, Kenny Wright, Mediue Williams, D.J. Dozier

Why Gary Anderson? He had that one horrible miss but, the Vikings that year should have beat the Falcons like a cheap drum. They shouldn’t have needed Anderson to save the day. Ponder’s problem is the fact that a couple of rookies have had great seasons so they felt Ponder should have done same. QB’s are on field managers and that’s what Ponder did last year. The team went from 3-13 to 10-6, the biggest single season turn around in Viking history. Why would any team throw as much as Green Bay or Chicago or Detroit ( teams with no run games worth shite), when you have AD. Even with the additions at WR the team will still be a run dominate team. Why the hell not? Someone incited this riot. One bonehead said Ponder sucks and a lot of people just bought into it. Tarkenton got the same criticisms. The Vikings gave him tools all over and he was still a short to mid range passer. He had guys who could get a lot of YAC’s! By the time he retired he owned most records. I just hope Ponder keeps his head up and team mates stay behind him and encourages him. SKOL

WR Mike Wallace says he took a $16 M cut to play with the Fins and strong-armed Tannehill instead of the Vikings and the noodle-armed Ponder. WR David Terrell says he would have given up his manhood to play with the strong-armed Cutler instead of Grossman, Orton, etc. The Vikings will never be able to stretch the field with Ponder. Defenses will learn they simply need to flood the underneath routes to stop Ponder’s short passing game and AD. Ponder has to be one of the biggest wastes of a top 12 draft pick in Vikings history.

The suckmost list should be well represented by a common Vikings problem through their history – the cornerbacks that have been burned by the deep ball – like Brian Williams, Karl Paymah and perhaps Robert Tate.
