A week ago Matt Cassel was the Vikings’ starting quarterback, and tonight against the Giants he is not even active. The only QB to win a regular season game in a Vikings uniform this year has been demoted to #3 behind starter Josh Freeman and backup Christian Ponder.
This is of course no surprise to anyone, including Cassel, who said he expected Freeman to become the starter the second he heard about the signing. Cassel holds the clipboard tonight in the official Sage Rosenfels role, trying to help Freeman who has only been with the team for a couple of weeks.
Also inactive Monday night for the Vikings: LB Gerald Hodges, DE Justin Trattou (a former Giant who I’m sure was pumped for information during meetings), G Jeff Baca, CB A.J. Jefferson (Jacob Lacey is active in his place) and DT Chase Baker.
Active tonight for the Vikes is OT Matt Kalil who was listed as questionable on the injury report with a bad back. Brandon Jacobs, who was questionable all week, is down for the Giants.
Anticipation builds as we crawl toward a kickoff time of 7:40 Central. Remember when Monday night games used to start at 7? I miss those days. Why can’t we go back to that? Oh right, they need to get in all the pregame commercial breaks. So important.
