2014 NFL Mock Draft: Minnesota Vikings Select Quarterback Derek Carr

A new mock draft has been handed down from the FanSided mothership. Who are the Vikings taking this week? The pick is in

#8 Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

Bortles and Manziels and Carrs oh my!

The pluses for Derek Carr:

Arm. Athleticism. Doesn’t get drunk and chase women that we know of.

The minuses:

Accuracy sometimes. Played out of the shotgun a lot in college so, can he play under center? College system may have helped over-inflate his stats. Has Blaine Gabbert written all over him.

The plus-or-minuses:

He has the same last name as David Carr who sucked. He has the same first name as Derek Jeter who does not suck but unfortunately is a baseball player so I don’t know if this take is really significant.

Has Colin Cowherd said anything dismissive/jerky about him yet: No.

Does he pop on film according to Mike Mayock: Undetermined.

My take: I never heard much about this guy. Then Fresno State won some games and everyone talked about him. His draft stock “went up” which is what happens when people start talking about you. I read he squares his shoulders so that’s good. Josh Freeman DOESN’T square his shoulders so you know that squaring your shoulders is important if you don’t want to be terrible like Josh Freeman.

Is he better than Christian Ponder: I don’t know. Is Blaine Gabbert? Not really. So this is tough. I need to read seven or eight more Todd McShay mocks before I make up my mind what my opinion should be.

Did we learn nothing from Christian Ponder. You don’t take a Derek Carr whose extrapolated numbers in a spread system against subpar competition are the reason he’s look at at such high regard. YOU CANT JUST IGNORE THE USC TAPE WHERE HE WAS AWFUL. Bottom line is our defense was this teams Achilles heal last season. Sure QB is the story line but our defense is the reason we were such a bad team. We’re in a position at 8 where we can get a dominant defensive player like a Timmy Jernigan or Khalil Mack, solidify our defense. Even a dominant corner would be better than a Carr. I’d take a Tajh Boyd or a Mettenberger in round 3 over a Carr round one, I’m not even sure those 2 won’t have better careers than Carr. Draft Jernigan at 8, Telvin Smith or Lamarcus Joyner round 2 and worry about QBnext year because the QB we need won’t be available at 8. Bottom line if the Vikings can’t get Bortles, Teddy or Johnny they must go defense.

    • Matt Broderson

      Mettenberger any day over Carr

I’d go with McCarron, he’s a winner in a winning program which is in the toughest conference in college. He’s smart, makes good decisions, very accurate, has good footwork, has a quick release, and knows how to win games. He doesn’t have the astronomical numbers that some guys put up when they face much weaker opponents, but he’d be a great fit for the Vikings and they could probably get him at the top of the 2nd round. They need to pick up the best NT available at #8 to stop the run and shore up their D-line better.

Not another terrible quarterback. I can’t take watching another era of a disgusting passing game.
