Rick Spielman Still Says He Wants Christian Ponder Back

Rick Spielman is staying on-message when it comes to Christian Ponder’s future. And I’m still calling BS on that “message.”

The Vikings GM said not long ago that the team wanted Ponder back for next season. During his combine media rounds Thursday, Spielman reiterated that he plans for Ponder to stay with the Vikings in 2014.

Spielman laid out his “ideal scenario” for the Vikings at QB: A veteran, Christian Ponder and a young QB.

That veteran could well end up being Matt Cassel. Spielman says he will meet with Cassel’s agent at the combine Thursday afternoon.

The young QB will likely be someone the Vikings pick up in the draft, but not necessarily at #8. Spielman has said he likes the depth in this year’s QB class, so don’t rule out a QB being taken with a later pick.

And to all of this I say…still not buying it.

Nope. Still not buying that Ponder is a lock to be back in 2014. Still think Spielman is just saying that to avoid undermining Ponder’s trade value.

Still think Spielman wants to deal Ponder for a late-round pick.

Now does that mean Spielman will be able to trade Ponder? No. It’s quite likely that no trade will be worked out. So the Vikes will have to decide between cutting Ponder and keeping him.

Given those choices, I think the Vikings just hold on to Ponder, since the cap relief from cutting him would be zilch due to dead money.

So yes, they could very well end up keeping Ponder. But that would not be an “ideal scenario” for Spielman. Spielman doesn’t want Ponder back in 2014. He will hold his nose and keep Ponder if he has no other choice.

Are you kidding me? You say you disagree and you know what Rick “really” wants, but like the God argument, you won’t be able to prove it. Give me a break! What a crap article. This is the same junk that posters spew on Vikings Update. Ponder is not as bad as people want to paint him. Is he the answer, no, but he is a solid backup who knows our players. Not to mention, cutting him would get nothing and leave us with 3 QBs with little to no experience or rapport with this team.

Cut Ponder, let Cassel go. We are in a rebuilding time as the stadium is being built. Don’t keep making the same mistakes year after year. Face it neither are the future for the Vikings. Draft a QB move up if you have too, but really we’ve seen what a lack of leadership does to a football team for the last 3 years, it aint pretty. We’ve have Freeman for a song and Webb is under contract and doing great for the team.

You do realize there is only 1 QB on the roster right? Freeman is a FA and Cassel opted out of his contract and is also a FA as is Joe Webb. So those guys are NOT under contract. And they will not move up to get a QB they may go in round 2 but I think the QB will be taken in late round 3 or round 4. David Fales, Zach Mettenberger or Aaron Murray are all solid choices. They should not reach for Manziel, Bridgewater or Bortles they are not solid worthy picks. IMO. Bridgewater the exception if I had to pick one. Watch tape on the later round guys and then tell me you dont want our biggest need with the first 3 or 4 picks… DEFENSE
