Mike Zimmer Informed Christian Ponder of Team’s QB Plans

Christian Ponder can’t complain about a lack of communication between him and new Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. And he can’t claim to be surprised when the Vikings add more quarterbacks to the roster ahead of the 2014 season.

Zimmer has kept the lines of communication open with Ponder. And he’s been very open with Ponder about the team’s quarterback plans.

Zimmer told Jim Rome about his recent conversation with the only QB currently on the Vikings’ roster.

“I actually talked to Christian Ponder today,” Zimmer told Rome. “I told him we’re going to try to draft a quarterback at some point, we are going to probably sign a quarterback in free agency.”

You can’t be any more forthright than that.

Zimmer wouldn’t give details about Ponder’s response. He only said that Ponder gave “his side.”

Previously, Ponder indicated that if he wasn’t going to start in Minnesota, he wanted out. Zimmer certainly hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Ponder starting, but he hasn’t handed Ponder the job either.

Quite the opposite, in fact. Zimmer has made it clear that if Ponder wants to start for the Vikings, he’ll have to earn it.

Something of a reversal from the attitude of previous head coaches, who were always so eager to name a starting quarterback well ahead of the season.

I guess Zimmer doesn’t believe in serving out starting jobs to guys who haven’t earned it yet. What a novel concept.

But Ponder can’t complain that he’s being treated unfairly. Zimmer laid out to him what the situation is. When camp comes around, Ponder will have his chance to show why he should start.

If he hasn’t been traded by then.

I really think that the 49ers and Ravens would be good suitors for him as a backup. Any team with a legitimate running game can run a Ponder-coast system for two to four weeks and probably split wins and losses.

I agree, I’d even add teams like Redskins, Seahawks, Jags, and Browns. Ponder is athletic and could be a decent backup to Wilson and RG3. He’s got starting experience and is at least a younger option than what some teams have. As far as the Jags, Ponder’s better than anyone currently on their roster.( that’s not saying much though) with the Browns he’s younger than Campbell and better than Weeden. If we could get at least either a 5th or 6th or a conditional pick in 2015, I’d say trade him!!

Manziel or mallett anything else is a failure

    • Ken Tomlin

Manziel is athletic, but I don’t think he’d be a good fit for Norv’s system. Plus he has more baggage than most teenage girls. He’d be great with a team that runs more of read option type offense. Can’t see Norv changing his system that much to accomadate him. As far as Mallet, if we could get him for our 2nd 3rd rd pick or a 4th, I’d love to have him! He’s got the arm to thrive under Norv’s guidance, and he’s learned how to be a pro sitting behind Brady for the last few years.

This is exactly the type of response and coaching the Kings need…I will now buy season tickets….if….they also make medical herbs available…..!

the viqueens roster has three qbs on it.

Try just one Ponder is the only QB under contract. Freeman’s contract expired and Cassel opted out of the 2nd year. Try again Troll.

Sounds like something uneducated Pecker fans say

  • Sam

Ponder’s got bipolar abilities that can’t be treated b/c there’s no treatment for a QB that just well, sucks. One week he can throw five touch downs and win a game, the next week he’ll throw 5 interceptions and lose a game! I can’t believe the stupidity of the Vikings Org still keeping him around and thinking they can possibly still have any glimmer of a chance with this guy who AT BEST is mediocre…MEDIOCRE….ME-di-Ocre. I guess MN isn’t serious about winning a SB anytime soon. Hey I don’t blame Percy Harvin for wanting out in part due to Ponder’s lack of skills
