The market for Jared Allen is proving as thin as everyone expected. Denver passed on him in favor of DeMarcus Ware, then the Packers said no thanks and went with Julius Peppers instead.

Jared may now be down to his last few options as this year’s free agency frenzy peters out. Allen visited Seattle but left without a deal. Now the former Pro Bowler is headed to Dallas for a visit, reports Sean Jensen.

Allen has indicated that he would rather retire than just hang on, but before he makes that decision, he clearly means to explore every possible opportunity.

Dallas is in dire need of defensive line help after letting DeMarcus Ware go, so maybe there’s something there for Jared, who has notched at least 9 sacks in 9 of the last 10 seasons.

I’m not sure Dallas at this point represents a great chance for Jared to win a ring, but he might have to put that stipulation aside if he wants to keep playing.

My sense is that if Dallas doesn’t sign Allen, that will be it for him, unless he’s willing to drastically lower his price. He has said he won’t lower his price under and circumstances, so don’t be shocked if a retirement announcement comes from Allen’s camp in the next few days.

And don’t be surprised if Jared, like Brett Favre before him, experiences a sudden itch to play later on, especially if a big-time contender expresses interest.
