2014 NFL Mock Draft: Vikings Select Johnny Manziel

The draft picture for the Vikings is a lot clearer now that they’ve gone through the first waves of free agency and locked down a few of their need positions.

After the signings we saw, you can cross nose tackle, slot cornerback and edge rusher off the list of critical needs.

But linebacker and long-term solution at quarterback are still on the list. And outside cornerback is there too.

How does this affect the Vikings when it comes to mock drafting?

It doesn’t really.

The main target positions for the Vikings at the top of mock drafts are still quarterback, linebacker and cornerback.

So take your pick of one of the top QBs, Khalil Mack or Justin Gilbert.

This week, the FanSided mock draft goes with QB Johnny Manziel. Way to not drop Teddy Bridgewater just based on his mediocre gloveless pro day.

If you want to go pure BFA, wide receiver Mike Evans or OT Jake Matthews could be considered.

But really? I still think plan A is the trade down. No matter how the top of the draft shakes out, an incredibly good player is going to be available at 8.

This is the year to cash in with the big Julio Jones-type trade.

The Vikings may not be in an ideal position to take a franchise quarterback, but they are in an ideal position to parlay their pick into a cornucopia of picks.

You know that’s what Rick Spielman wants to do.

Do your background on Norv Turners offense and Air Coryell. Manziel is not a fit! He is not big. He does not pre-read. He does not have a big arm down field (jump balls to Mike Evans is Evans doing the work). He is not a rhythm passer. He extends plays outside the pocket. All attributes not akin to a Turner offense.

I hate the pick of Manziel to the VIKES!! Gilbert/Mack at 8 if we can’t trade back. Carr/ Garoppolo/ McCarron in 2nd rd or a trade back into bottom of 1st if you’re worried one of those will be gone before you pick at 40!! Manziel will end up having the same problems the other “scrambling” QB’s have ( Vick, RG3,etc…) he’ll end up getting injured. I could go on and on about arm strength, accuracy inside the pocket and his character and off field issues, but I’ll just leave it at that!!

Johnny “Fran” Manziel is the ONLY QB worth taking at number 8. If we can’t trade up to get him, draft for defense (Justin Gilbert) or trade down. Bortles/Carr/Bridgewater aren’t as good as Ponder, or at least won’t be for at least 3 years. If no Manziel, then wait until 2015 when there will be several franchise quarterbacks. Build an elite defense in the meantime.

I’m not sold on any QB the Vikings might take at #8 ~ I notic Mayock and a few others backing off the 3 QB going in the top 10 ~ I just hope I dont have to pull for a player I dont want the Vikings to draft ~ And that would be any of the QB’s outside of Johnny ~ But if BPA take them to pick a LBer named Mack or one of the top CB or OL or WR I will be just fine with that also ~

No can do. Manziel is to small and he’s just going to run around and get hurt. The Vikings need to take the best guy available at the #8 spot. I’m hoping the rest of them go after qtb’s and we can get Khalil Mack.
