Sometimes, you just hear a quote about football that makes fans scratch their heads.  This time, it came on a quote about former Vikings cornerback Chris Cook.

Here’s a quote from ESPN’s Matt Williamson about cornerback Chris Cook:

"“They want him to be their Richard Sherman with Reid over the top. Cook is big and physical in press and does have a lot of ability. Not saying he is Sherman, but I do think that best uses Cook’s skill set.”"

What they meant by this, I don’t know.  But judging by the statement in general, I’m guessing Williamson has missed quite a few Vikings games over the last couple years.

Cook struggled mightily in nearly every aspect of his game over his 4 year stint with Minnesota.  He struggled with legal issues.  He struggled to stay healthy.  He struggled in coverage.  He just flat out struggled.

While I hope Cook can be successful in San Francisco, I think some folks might be putting their expectations a big high when it comes to his new career for the 49ers.  Perhaps they’re doing what the Vikings fans did, and saw a guy with all the physical tools to succeed and believe it to be able to translate to success on the field.

Maybe, with a new scheme and change in venue, Cook can succeed.  Until then, I’m skeptical.
