Draft Rumor: Vikings Will Strongly Consider Derek Carr at #8

If you put the flames to my feet and made me pick a scenario for the Vikings on draft day, I would say they will trade down and pick defense in the first, then take Zach Mettenberger in the second.

This is the impression I’ve formed over the past couple weeks, and for all I know it’s an impression that is deliberately being created by Rick Spielman as he attempts to mask his true intentions.

For all I know, there could be a different quarterback on Spielman’s mind. Maybe Fresno State’s Derek Carr?

Eric Galko is getting the impression that the Vikings are high on Carr as well. He wrote in his state of the draft piece for Optimum Scouting:

The Vikings have been most frequently linked to Zach Mettenberger in round two, but they’ll strongly consider Derek Carr if he’s available at #8 overall. Don’t be surprised if Carr goes above Manziel, and potentially is the first quarterback taken.

FWIW, Todd McShay gave the Vikings Johnny Manziel at #8 in his last mock, so McShay is not convinced by the Mettenberger scenario either.

Whether the Vikings end up with Carr or Manziel in the first, or Mettenberger in the second, it seems likely that they will take a quarterback in the first two rounds.

Rick Spielman wants to get this QB situation sewn up this year and not defer it until 2015. Even though Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston may both be available in 2015.

Like I said, I still think it will be Mettenberger. But that could easily change.

Anyone not named manziel is failure

    • trinity

How in the world do you figure that?

      • Kerry Elmberg jr

Passing 595 completions 863 attempts 7820 passing yards 63 td’s to only 22 int. passer rating of 164.1 and rushing 345 attempts for 2169 yards and another 30 td’s all of this in 2 years. 2years 93 td’s and 9,989 yards if that is not reason enough then u must like losing. I know I’m sick of the vikings losing its time to win his stats show he can do just that win

        • trinity

Correction, his stats show he can do just that IN COLLEGE. we all know that the pro game is an entirely different animal, and manziel is far from a sure thing. He was a very exciting playmaker in college.

He is also a guy who is short (5’11), doesn’t have speed that wows (4.68 40 yard dash at the combine), is a terrible decision maker and has a below average field awareness. A reciever can be wide open on an island, and manziel will not be aware, instead choosing to frantically fly out of the pocket. That leads to some exciting stuff against college defenders. It has a very good chance of landing him on injured reserved at the next level. Sure, he could change his style of play and find success, but that is FAR from a sure thing.

          • Kerry Elmberg jr

Russel Wilson come on if that don’t some up your reasoning

          • trinity

They have being short in common, and scrambling. But russell wilson is a far better decision maker, so I don’t see that comparison

          • Kerry Elmberg jr

They didn’t think that coming out of college about Wilson otherwise he would been drafted earlier

          • trinity

Well the people who are doubting manziel have excellent reason to doubt. Maybe he can have success, but that’s far from a lock. Time will tell

          • Kerry Elmberg jr

Well I can’t disagree with that last part time will tell

  • DDJR

Seems like everyday its a a new QB where so interested in. Its Pretty simple Bortles or Manziel or if you wait draft Garapollo..

    • David Mallow

If they pick Bortles we will be in the same place we are right now.. all he does is throw screens and checkdowns, his arm strength is very weak and pocket awareness is average at best.. if we want this type of play, we can roll with Ponder.. I say no to the 1 year wonder… and Manziel is far too erratic for me with his running in circles and throw it up and hope my WRs bail me out mentality…. His decision making skills are terrible.. he will get killed running around at the next level, and his wobbly desperation throws will be Ints at the next level… I say pass on these clowns…. Carr, Mettenberger, Fales are who they should get in here,

  • Daniel Laxen

Metten “I ate a Booger” Should not be considered, in my opinion. He’s going to get clobbered in the pocket and I fear his release isn’t quick enough to keep him from being killed. The leg issues are a big time red flag as well. (Watch him flounder vs. Alabama)..The injured QB that should be taken in the 3rd round is from Georgia, Aaron Murray. He doesn’t have the rocket arm of Mettenberger, but it’s plenty good enough and he wouldn’t be pressed into action for at least a year. His sacks went down as he progressed in college and his TD to INT ratio is exactly what the Vikings need. he kept the Bulldogs in the game vs. Auburn and they played for the national title last year…Take 2 good defensive players after moving down and use the pick you get to take Murray in the early 3rd round…

  • Ken Tomlin

Anyone named Manziel will be a failure! Wow! I can do it too! Lol!

    • Kerry Elmberg jr

Original. U must want another ponder or Jackson either that or you r a packers fan

      • Ken Tomlin

Neither. Been a Viking fan for 40 yrs. Just don’t think Manziel is the answer for us at QB, just like I knew Ponder wouldn’t be either. If I was forced to make a pick, my top 3 QB’s would be: Carr, Garoppolo, Mettenberger. I understand why people, like yourself, like Manziel. He’s exciting. I actually think if he went to a team that ran an offense like Washington’s, SEA’s or SF’s he’d do ok. Not all QB’s are good fits with every teams offensive schemes’. I used to not want Manziel or Mettenberger based on off-field issues. I’m man enough to admit I wasn’t giving them a “fair shake” as far as that goes. I just see other QB’s being a better fit with OUR team then Manziel. I do believe we’ll finally get it right this time. Norv is a proven OC and QB coach and he knows what he’s looking for. If it was still Musgrave, then I’d be worried!! So, don’t say ” anyone other than Manziel will be a failure”. Unless you can travel forward in time, WE don’t know who’s going to fail or succeed….. Yet!! SKOL VIKINGS!!

        • Kerry Elmberg jr

Well atleast u got the vikings best interests in your mind but as long as we get it right either way but I’m still hoping for manziel

  • 3kolu

The Pats might still want to trade Mallett for our second rounder, he’s way ore accomplished and NFL ready than any QB in the draft. He, like Cassel our bog strong-armed QB’s that have a history with the Pat’s.

  • Ken Johnson

Just take these reports with a grain of salt guys. Spielman and company are putting out massive smoke screens to try and throw everyone off on what their real plans are for the draft. For the last two months or even more there have been reports linking them to just about every big name QB in this draft. At this point it’s really anyone’s guess at best as too what they will really do and that all depends on what other teams do as well. Either way I just hope they make the right choice for what ever direction they go but so far I like the FA moves and Spielman has done FOR THE MOST PART well in the last two to three drafts just needs to nail QB in whatever round right this time. SKOL 2014!!!
