2014 NFL Draft: Vikings Select Blake Bortles in FanSided Editors Mock

December 21, 2012; St. Petersburg, FL, USA; UCF Knights quarterback Blake Bortles (5) throws the ball for a touchdown as Ball State Cardinals safety Jarrett Swaby (34) defends during the first quarter of the St. Petersburg Beef

A funny thing happened in the FanSided editors mock draft that I’m 100% certain will not happen tonight when the first round of the real draft takes place in New York.

Four QBs came off the board in the first eight picks.

By the time I had to make the pick for the Vikings at #8, Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr and Johnny Manziel were gone.

Since I had no option to trade down, I pulled a Rick Spielman panic move and drafted the only good QB available on the board. I went with Blake Bortles.

If Khalil Mack had been there, or Sammy Watkins, I would have grabbed either of those guys without hesitation.

I could have gone defense at that spot and probably I should have. But I just didn’t feel like any of the remaining defensive players, C.J. Mosley, Justin Gilbert, Aaron Donald, etc., were truly worthy of the #8.

I don’t know what got into me, but when push came to shove, I just froze up. I went with the BQBA. I went with Bortles.

Will a similar thing happen to Rick Spielman tonight? When it comes right down to it, will the quarterback question overwhelm Spielman and force him to make a pick that deep down he doesn’t want to make?

If Bortles is there at 8, will Spielman panic and take Bortles?

Or will he stay strong, wait it out and get a QB later?

We don’t have very much longer to wait.
