Vikings CB Terence Newman intercepts Cam Newton

Terence Newman recorded an interception of Cam Newton in the third quarter, adding to a dominant performance by the Vikings defense.

With the Vikings clinging to just a six-point lead late in the third quarter, the Panthers were looking to set up a drive until 38-year old veteran cornerback Terence Newman came up clutch with an interception.

Newman jumped out in front of an ill-advised pass from reigning MVP Cam Newton, cutting off an out route to Ted Ginn Jr. and leaping into the air to secure the pick. The interception came at a very opportune time, as it stopped the Panthers drive before it could even get under way and led to a field goal for the Vikings, giving them a two-score lead.

With Xavier Rhodes limited in his return from a knee injury, it was critical for Newman to step up to limit the high-powered passing attack of Cam Newton and the Panthers. Other than a few lapses in coverage early and a pass interference penalty, Newman certainly did that.

Newman’s interception was the second of three Vikings picks in the game, adding to an outstanding overall performance in which the Vikings limited yardage, sacked the quarterback, and generated turnovers with ease.

Going into the season, many expected Terence Newman to transition into a reserve role, acting as a mentor for the younger defensive backs on the team. Plays like this, in which the wily veteran reads the eyes of the quarterback, jumping in front of the route for an easy interception, serve as a perfect reminder that Newman still offers immense value to the team as a player.
