Awesome Defense Or Crap Offense?

Sean Jensen, in the Pioneer-Press’s cheesy Vikings Now blog (if you’re gonna use Blogger at least get rid of the navbar guys – jeez), remarks today about how great the Vikings DBs are looking.  He singles out rookie Marcus McCauley for mad props, talking about a diving catch he made on a “crazy play” he can’t divulge for mysterious reasons related to the “team’s interests” (let me guess – they’re trying to install a 46 defense?).  Jensen also gives kudos to Cedric Griffin for picking off a Cortez Hankton bobble, and tipping one away from Troy Williamson.  About the defense’s overall performance today, Jensen says this:

"The defense is dominating practice. … After a slow start, things got interesting around 4:20. … The defense created three turnovers in a row, including two picks and a fumble recovery."

Seems to me, Sean, that there are two angles you could take on this story.  One is that the defense is playing really great, and the other is that the offense is playing really bad.  Are our DBs really that awesome, or do we just have incredibly inept receivers?

I personally would be more encouraged to hear Troy Williamson was snatching balls away from Cedric Griffin rather than the other way around.  We know Cedric can play – we don’t know if Troy can.  And the fact that Cortez Hankton bobbled one that Cedric picked – all this proves is that Cedric has better hands than Hankton; so maybe Cedric should play receiver?  Honestly, at this point, we might be better off trying to convert one of our DBs.  It was reported yesterday that Marcus McCauley out-ran Sidney Rice on a deep ball – so why not try out McCauley at receiver?  He’s got as much experience as an NFL pass-catcher as most of our actual receivers do, which is to say, none.

Not to put down Sean Jensen for showing so much enthusiasm…but honestly, he’s talking about “protecting the team’s interests,” and then he’s gushing about our corners taking balls away from receivers who, on most teams, would be lucky to be practice squad prospects.  Talk about spinning.  Seriously, the White House should hire Jensen – in a minute flat he’d have us all believing Iraq is under control, the Iranians are our bitches and global warming is just something Al Gore dreamed up while he was high.  What are you trying to do Sean, turn Vikings Now into the purple equivalent of Fox News?  At least they don’t use Blogger…
