Holcomb To Start?
By Dan Zinski
Viking fans clamoring for Kelly Holcomb to get the nod Sunday against Kansas City may get their wish – at least going by what Judd Zulgad had to say today on Access Vikings:
"Vikings coach Brad Childress won’t say for public consumption that Tarvaris Jackson (groin) won’t play Sunday at Kansas City, but the quarterback sat out again Thursday. At this point, all indications are that Kelly Holcomb is going to start."
It just seems logical to me – if Jackson can’t go, then Holcomb should be the starter. Otherwise why bother acquiring the guy? If Brooks Bollinger had really been thought of as the number 2, then they would’ve just forgotten Holcomb and held onto Tyler Thigpen. The only reason Holcomb wasn’t officially number 2 for the first couple games was that he still had a few little things in the offense to learn. But now he’s had a week of practice splitting snaps evenly with Bollinger and has to be ready to go. So there shouldn’t be any doubt – Holcomb’s the guy. Now the question becomes: If Holcomb plays well Sunday and the Vikes win, does Tarvaris Jackson still get his job back when he’s ready? Or does Chilly give in to what every veteran on the team must want and let Holcomb have the job?
And what happens if Holcomb goes out on Sunday and stinks it up? Then it’s back to T-Jack for sure. And we’ll have no choice but to suffer with him for the rest of the season, unless we prefer suffering with Brooks Bollinger. There won’t be any Kelly Holcomb to look to with yearning in our eyes, or anyone else to save us.
