Vikings Cut Roster to 53
By Dan Zinski
The deadline for teams to trim their rosters to 53 is Saturday at 5 PM central. Refresh this page throughout the afternoon for updates.
Cornerback DeAndre Wright is the first to go. The Vikes figure to be down to three healthy corners by the end of the day.
Tight end Garrett Mills is cut. Mills caught 4 passes for 106 yards against the Rams this preseason…then promptly got hurt. That’s the story of his life right there. It appears Mickey Shuler will make the team.
FB Ryan D’Imperio. He became something of a fan favorite with his gritty effort this preseason. Vikings will surely try to keep him around on the practice squad.
WR Freddie Brown. Tom Pelissero says the team will try to sign him to the practice squad.
CB Marcus Sherels. Another practice squad candidate. Any decent corners on the waiver wire yet?
DT Tremaine Johnson. Vikes are pretty loaded at defensive line. Could end up trading a guy like Fred Evans before the day is over.
RB Ian Johnson. Another non-shocker.
G Thomas Austin. I’ll miss his smile.
T Chris Clark. He was brutally, brutally awful this preseason. Worse than Tarvaris Jackson even.
WR Logan Payne. It looked for awhile like he had a legit shot, then injury derailed him. This almost guarantees that Javon Walker made the squad.
DE Mike Montgomery. No surprise. Vikings so loaded on the defensive line.
G Adrian Battles. Getting down to the nitty-gritty now.
K Rhys Lloyd. Was going to be the kick-off specialist, but didn’t exactly wow everyone with his big leg – until the last preseason game when he started burying it deep in the end zone. That was not enough to save him, obviously.
T Drew Radovich. Another guy the Vikings were supposedly really high on…until they weren’t.
WR Javon Walker. Okay this is a stunner. After the Logan Payne cut, it really looked like Walker was a lock. This must mean a wide receiver trade/signing is imminent. T.J. Houshmandzadeh? We’ll have to wait and see.
The remaining cuts come via Vikings.com:
S Colt Anderson
WR Taye Biddle
T Patrick Brown
WR Marquis Hamilton
LB Nate Triplett
The wide receiver cuts leave the Vikings with only 4. This seems to reinforce the notion that they have signed/are about to sign T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Though the possibility remains that they could bring back Javon Walker if for some reason the Housh thing doesn’t happen. This wacky day is apparently not over.
