O.J. Atogwe Cut By Redskins, Giving Viking Fans a Chuckle

Last year free agent safety O.J. Atogwe chose the Redskins over the Vikings partly because, in his own words, God told him to play for Washington. On Monday God brought His incomprehensible plan for O.J. Atogwe to fruition by telling the Redskins to cut him in a move to clear cap space.

And the Redskins NEED to clear cap space. In case you hadn’t heard, the NFL today slapped down the Skins and Cowboys for using the uncapped year in 2010 as a salary dumping ground. Washington and Dallas will have to surrender $36 and $10 million in cap space respectively, but can spread that over the next two years. The fringe benefit for teams like the Vikings? 28 other teams (the Saints and Raiders were left out for being naughty too, just not as naughty as the Skins and Boys) now get an extra $1.6 million in cap space.

Will the Vikings use that extra money to sign O.J. Atogwe, a player they pursued fairly hard last year before God whispered in his ear about the green fields of Washington? I’m guessing not. Atogwe turned out to be a bust last year in Washington and was finally benched, plus he’s 31 now. If you ask me, the Vikes should be glad God did them a favor by sending O.J. to Washington. See guys? The almighty DOES sometimes smile on the purple.
