New mocks are in from both Todd McShay and Mel Kiper. Both ESPN draft geniuses have the Vikings going defense. One has defensive tackle as the target, the other has cornerback. The whole point of these mocks is to throw new names in there and these guys have done an admirable job. Neither of these players has been on the radar much. I do have to say though, I’ve mentioned both of them before. So you can’t accuse me of totally sleeping on the job I guess.
But enough about me, here’s what McShay and Kiper say. Kiper has the Vikings taking North Carolina defensive tackle Sylvester Williams. McShay has them taking Connecticut cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson. The full mocks are behind the ESPN Insider paywall but Kevin Seifert was kind enough to post them on his blog along with a short comment.
Both Williams and Wreh-Wilson are probably unfamiliar names to fans unless you’re the type who pay incredibly close attention to the Senior Bowl and all that. I said this about Wreh-Wilson heading in to the Senior Bowl:
"Not overwhelmingly great in any area but solid in all. Decent speed, some physicality. Could make a good Tampa-2 guy. Has some ballhawking instincts. Worth a look possibly in the third or fourth."
The scouting reports on Wreh-Wilson have him as a 3rd or 4th round prospect but obviously his stock is rising. McShay has him going all the way in the first to the Vikings. Keeping in mind this is a very early mock and sometimes these guys throw out wacky names in early mocks just to shake it up a little.
DT Sylvester Williams is another intriguing propect. I also mentioned him in an earlier post. Quoting myself again:
"Highly talented young kid who hasn’t played a ton of ball. One of those late bloomer sorts who could really be a steal. Another guy to keep an eye on. Probably put up huge combine numbers and leap into the top 15."
I think every possible first round defensive tackle has now been mocked to the Vikings by someone. Johnathan Jenkins is another guy they could have interest in. Kawann Short also.
And the mock draft beat rolls on…
