Confirmation that the Vikings will at least give themselves another option alongside back-up QB Joe Webb. Leslie Frazier told KFAN’s Paul Allen that the Vikings will have an “open competition” for the #2 job this year. Does this mean Joe Webb vs. McLeod Bethel-Thompson or does it mean Joe Webb vs. Someone New? No idea yet. I will however refer you to Tony Pauline’s report that Drew Stanton may be on the Vikings’ radar screens as a free agent target.
Stanton sounds like exactly the sort of QB the Vikings would bring in and pit against Webb in training camp. Maybe MBT fits into that picture or maybe not. I would think he has to fit somewhere given how optimistic they were about his skills last year.
I personally think that Joe Webb would be toast in any open competition against any reasonably competent quarterback. Drew Stanton is no great shakes but he should have no problem defeating Webb. As we saw in the playoff debacle, Webb can’t throw. At all.
And for those of you who still wish to keep Webb around as a gimmick QB/Wildcat specialist/possible wide receiver? Time to get over it. That take is so 2011.
