City Pages has uncovered what might be the conspiracy of the century: During Monday’s introductory Josh Freeman media conference call, according to the sleuths at City Pages, if you listened very closely you could hear Vikings GM Rick Spielman whispering in Freeman’s ear what to say in response to reporters’ questions. City Pages has thoroughly examined the recording of the conference call and unearthed several shocking examples of Spielman coaching Freeman on exactly what BS to recite.

For instance, at one point Freeman was asked by some meanie reporter about what exactly happened between him and Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano (Freeman and Schiano clashed a little bit down there in Tampa dontcha know). Freeman evidently had trouble conjuring an answer for himself so Spielman apparently whispered to him, “Everything was great down there.”

This helped break the log-jam in Josh’s brain, allowing him to give the proper baloney answer: “I had a lot of great memories there, a lot of good times with the fellas.”

See? He answered the question without answering it. The essence of the Spielman approach! The good news here for Viking fans? Josh Freeman is eminently coachable. A couple sessions with the boys at the PR office and Josh will have the whole routine down. He won’t even need Rick to whisper him the answers anymore. He’ll be able to talk bullcrap all by himself.

There are allegedly more examples on the recording of Rick feeding answers to Freeman in a whispering voice. Should you care to examine this mystery for yourself, there is a copy of the conference call at this link. I advise you to be very very careful and not get sucked too deep into this particular puzzle. Have you ever seen the movie Blow Out with John Travolta? Don’t let that happen to you.
