Draft Rumor: Vikings Will Strongly Consider Derek Carr at #8

If you put the flames to my feet and made me pick a scenario for the Vikings on draft day, I would say they will trade down and pick defense in the first, then take Zach Mettenberger in the second.

This is the impression I’ve formed over the past couple weeks, and for all I know it’s an impression that is deliberately being created by Rick Spielman as he attempts to mask his true intentions.

For all I know, there could be a different quarterback on Spielman’s mind. Maybe Fresno State’s Derek Carr?

Eric Galko is getting the impression that the Vikings are high on Carr as well. He wrote in his state of the draft piece for Optimum Scouting:

"The Vikings have been most frequently linked to Zach Mettenberger in round two, but they’ll strongly consider Derek Carr if he’s available at #8 overall. Don’t be surprised if Carr goes above Manziel, and potentially is the first quarterback taken."

FWIW, Todd McShay gave the Vikings Johnny Manziel at #8 in his last mock, so McShay is not convinced by the Mettenberger scenario either.

Whether the Vikings end up with Carr or Manziel in the first, or Mettenberger in the second, it seems likely that they will take a quarterback in the first two rounds.

Rick Spielman wants to get this QB situation sewn up this year and not defer it until 2015. Even though Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston may both be available in 2015.

Like I said, I still think it will be Mettenberger. But that could easily change.
