Vikings Draft Rumors: Late Steam for Mike Evans

If Rick Spielman’s intention yesterday was to spawn a bunch of late Mike Evans rumors, then kudos to Rick. He accomplished his task.

To me, Spielman’s press conference talk sounded like the usual nothing, but a lot of people apparently disagreed. Several media people picked up on perceived hints in Spielman’s presser jive and spun this into Mike Evans talk.

The two Spielman non-statements that led to all the speculation:

“Everybody reads the mocks, because we’re tired of yelling at each other, so at night I read the mocks and kind of get caught up on things. You guys are missing some names on our spot at eight, I can tell you that.”

Some names? What names. WHAT NAMES RICK, JUST TELL US?

(Mike Evans? Maybe?)

And statement number two:

“Regardless of position, if there’s a guy there that you have strong feelings for, whether it’s at eight or 40 or wherever it is, or 16, then you take him.”

16? WHY DID HE SPECIFICALLY MENTION 16? IS HE TRYING TO DRUM UP A TRADE?

Drop those two innocuous statements into the Twitter Magic Rumor-Making Machine and what do you wind up with?

The Vikings are interested in wide receiver Mike Evans.

Or, if you want it take it that extra over-thinking mile, RICK SPIELMAN WANTS US TO THINK THEY WANT MIKE EVANS SO SOME TEAM WILL TRADE UP TO DRAFT MIKE EVANS.

Because every other GM in the league is checking in on Rick Spielman’s press conference and reading hidden meanings into his statements.

Now there’s some team out there, Buffalo say, who thinks the Vikings are going to draft Mike Evans and OH MY GOD BUFFALO BETTER TRADE UP NOW BECAUSE MIKE EVANS WILL BE GONE.

Hey, maybe it works. Or maybe everyone is just a little too caught up in trying to spin every statement into speculation and rumor?

Maybe?

Dunno. Anyway, I am reporting that there is late steam on Mike Evans going to the Vikings. I have no real source for this information but it’s out there, it’s been brought up by people who are paid by legitimate media outlets, it’s been talked about extensively on Twitter.
