The huge buzz this Draft Day morning is about the Dallas Cowboys being in love with Johnny Manziel. How in love? Todd McShay said on SportsCenter that he is hearing Manziel is the #1 player on the Cowboys’ board.
That’s a lot of love.
Here’s the thing though: the Cowboys don’t have a draft pick until #16, so that means Johnny Manziel will have to drop past a bunch of teams who need quarterbacks if Dallas is going to make it happen with their man crush.
What to do if you’re Jerry Jones? Can you sit tight at 16 hoping Manziel falls to you or do you have to get aggressive and make a trade up the board?
Here’s where the Vikings potentially come in. They are sitting at 8 as we know. If you’re the Cowboys and Manziel makes it to 8, how hard do you start worrying about a few teams picking behind the Vikings, including the QB-needy Titans?
That’s where a big trade could happen. Rick Spielman will certainly have this in the back of his mind as the #8 selection comes up. The great thing for the Vikings is that there should be a quality defensive player available at #8, so they don’t HAVE to trade down.
They can afford to hold Jerry Jones’ feet to the flames and get a really nice package of picks. If Jerry really wants Manziel that badly and Minnesota happens to be the key to making Johnny Football into Johnny Cowboy.
