Matt Cassel Is the Vikings’ Starting QB In Everything But Name

The Vikings have yet to name an official starting quarterback, but it doesn’t take a genius to read between the lines and figure out that Matt Cassel is considered the #1 guy inside Winter Park.

Fact: Matt Cassel has received the majority of first team reps in OTAs.

Fact: Cassel has been strongly endorsed by OC Norv Turner, who likes Cassel so much, he reportedly tried bringing him to Cleveland last year.

Fact: The Vikings moved quickly to re-sign Cassel before free agency began, wanting to keep him from hitting the market.

Teddy Bridgewater will have his day, maybe even this year, but it’s clear that Cassel will be the starter going into training camp. Bridgewater says he is fine with the current pecking order.

“It’s not tough at all because I have nothing but my best interest for the team, and I’m very excited about this team that we have here,” the rookie said per ESPN. “I’m just happy for this entire team.”

Good work by the rookie, saying all the right things. That media schooling by Vikings PR is paying off.

There’s really no downside to proceeding with Cassel as the starter. He is good enough to hold down the fort in the short term, and he clearly has the respect of teammates. But, at some point, the reins will be handed to Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater is the future. Cassel is the stopgap. Christian Ponder is what you’re left with if everything falls apart.
