5. Jerome Simpson

Old Jerome Simpson always seems to be hanging on by a thread. Is it finally time for the Vikings to cut that thread and let Jerome plunge Wile E. Coyote-like into the abyss? Or does the ever-exuberant receiver still have a place with this franchise?

Jerome still looks fairly safe, but it’s only because the Vikings haven’t tried that hard to replace him. Yes, Adam Thielen has emerged, but even with Thielen coming into the picture, Simpson still looks to have a decent chance to stick around.

Simpson’s whole case hinges on one fact: he’s still the only semi-established speedy outside receiver on the roster. I fear the Vikings will never quite trust Jarius Wright as a #3, thanks to his lack of stature. Adam Thielen could ultimately win that job, making Simpson completely expendable, but he hasn’t proven it yet.

There aren’t a lot of other enticing options on the roster. Rodney Smith has the height but what has he done? Kain Colter is strictly a slot man. Break it down and Simpson still looks like a keep. Mostly likely, he hangs on for one more year.
