Adrian Peterson on Aaron Rodgers phantom facemask
By Dan Zinski
Adrian Peterson gave his take on the phantom facemask that allowed Aaron Rodgers and the Packers one more chance to beat the Lions.
Like millions of others, Adrian Peterson was absolutely glued to his TV last night as the Packers pulled off their miracle win over the no-luck Detroit Lions.
And like the majority of those millions, Peterson thinks the refs gave the Packers a gift.
Trailing by two and needing to drive 80 yards for a winning score with only seconds left, Green Bay set up a desperation hook-and-lateral play that seemed to end in failure after the ball wound up back with Aaron Rodgers who was tackled with no time left on the clock.
But not so fast. The referee flagged the Detroit tackler for a facemask penalty, giving Green Bay one more chance.
Green Bay took advantage of their gift by executing a Hail Mary pass to Richard Rodgers in the end zone for the winning TD.
But back to that facemask penalty. Um…this is a facemask?
Adrian Peterson doesn’t think that was a facemask, as he indicated with this tweet.
Adrian wrote another tweet clarifying that he meant to say “facemask” and not “pass interference.”
There was certainly far less contact on the Rodgers play than on the play from a few weeks back when Mike Neal of the Packers hit Teddy Bridgewater in the helmet and seemed to grab his facemask while completing a sack.
The Bridgewater play was not flagged. But of course Bridgewater is not Aaron Rodgers. The Vikings are not the Packers.
The officials know which teams/players to protect. All Adrian can do is laugh.
Thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ Favre-like miracle heave, and some help from the officials, the Packers may have their mojo back.
Sets up a much more intriguing matchup Jan. 3 when the Vikings travel to Lambeau.
