While Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer did a great job turning around a struggling franchise, there is no rush to getting him a contract extension.

If you ask many Minnesota Vikings fans who their favorite head coach of all time is, odds are that they will pick the legendary Bud Grant. But if you ask them who their second favorite is, current shot caller Mike Zimmer might be one of the more popular answers,

Much like Grant, Mike Zimmer has done some great things for the franchise. He’s turned around one of the worst defenses in the NFL and helped make them one of the top units in the league. Zimmer has pounded the table for physical, talented players in the draft, and general manager Rick Spielman has answered his wishes with players like Anthony Barr and Danielle Hunter.

When a team has a coach like Mike Zimmer, they want to lock him down for as long as possible, but according to a recent post on the ESPN website, staff writer Ben Goessling spoke with the head coach and doesn’t see any rush in getting a long-term deal inked.

Here is what Goessling said:

"“From what Zimmer has told me, he has at least two years left on his deal; it doesn’t expire after this season, and it’s possible he has three seasons left. All he was willing to tell me when I asked him about his initial deal was that it was longer than three years. So there’s no real rush to get something done with Zimmer. But if the Vikings have another big season and go to the playoffs, I’d expect a contract extension could be something like the Vikings discuss with Zimmer’s agent, Marvin Demoff. They’re thrilled with the direction Zimmer has taken the team so far, and another strong season could see him rewarded.”"

The urge is to want to lock him down as long as possible right away, but the idea of waiting to get more results while Zimmer is still under contract is a fantastic idea. Not only does it open the door for him to get a bigger payday, but it gives the team more time to evaluate their coach and determine the value that he brings to the team.
