Roddy White says he would love to be a Viking (Video)

Roddy White is currently looking for work and says he would love to be reunited with receivers coach George Stewart in Minnesota.
There is a line of reasoning that says the Vikings should look to sign a veteran to act as mentor to their relatively young corps of receivers.
If the Vikings do wish to add a more-experienced player to help Stefon Diggs, Laquon Treadwell and the gang learn the tricks of the trade, former Falcons WR Roddy White might be willing to take on the job.
White on Thursday was asked by the media about his possible interest in signing with Minnesota and he indicated that he would be amenable to the idea.
But Minnesota was not the only place White threw out there as a possible landing spot. Roddy White believes in keeping his options open.
In 11 years in the NFL, White has amassed 10,863 yards and 63 touchdowns on 808 total receptions. From 2007 through 2012 he was undeniably one of the top receivers in the entire league.
White’s production has not been there the last three years, and last season he bottomed out with just 506 yards on 43 catches. Atlanta released White on March 2nd.
It’s not hard to see why White would wish to sign with the Vikings. White has said he wants to catch on with a team that has a chance to make a Super Bowl, and this year Minnesota is considered to be a legitimate contender. White also would like to be reunited with former Falcons WR coach George Stewart, who for the last ten years has been employed by Minnesota.
The signing makes slightly less sense when you look at it from the Vikings’ point-of-view. White is 34 and his production has been steadily going downhill since 2012. What at this point does White have to offer beyond wisdom? It’s all fine-and-good to have a veteran on the roster to act as a mentor, but that veteran also has to be able to produce on the field.
Who do you cut in order to add Roddy White? Do you let go of Charles Johnson, a young player who has experience in the offense? Do you cut Cordarrelle Patterson even though he has reportedly been working much harder this offseason than in past years? Do you let go of all-around contributor Adam Thielen?

Giving up on young players in order to add fading veterans like Roddy White is the kind of strategy you would expect from prior Vikings front offices. The current regime is invested in its plan of drafting well and developing talent.
Unless things change in a big way in the coming weeks, I’d be shocked to see the Vikings make a run at Roddy White. But it’s nice that he wants to come to Minnesota. It’s always good to be appreciated.
