Kenrick Ellis, DT

Ellis actually spent the last 9 weeks of the season on the Vikings’ roster, occupying a rotational role on the injury-decimated defense after Shamar Stephen was put on IR. Although he filled in admirably after being signed midseason, many are already forgetting about him as this season approaches.

With Linval Joseph, Shariff Floyd, and Tom Johnson all locks to make the ream, many assume that Shamar Stephen will simply return from injury and seize the fourth and final defensive tackle spot.

Kenrick Ellis, a former 3rd round pick, may pose serious competition for Stephen, however.

At 6’5″ and 346 pounds, Ellis couples prototypical nose tackle size with impressive movement skills. With a 5.27 second 40 yard dash, Ellis’ explosiveness stood out at times on film.

Registering 5 tackles and a quarterback hurry in very limited playing time last year, Ellis has significant value in both the running and passing games. With few glaring weaknesses to his game, Ellis could be very useful as a well-rounded backup.

With the strength to take on double teams and stuff the run and the explosiveness and quickness to generate pressure on the quarterback, Ellis has the skill set to be a very solid reserve.

At 28 years old, Ellis also has the potential to continue developing under Mike Zimmer and accomplished defensive line coach Andre Patterson.

While Shamar Stephen may be the popular pick, expect Ellis to turn heads with his versatile skill set in training camp and earn serious consideration for a roster spot.
